![]() You cared enough to type four sentences on your tedious rant. The recent versions of Windows are capable of booting directly on the machine WITHOUT "Bootcamp". There's no more CSM for booting legacy operating systems and the drivers mostly work OOTB. So really, the story should be that Bootcamp has been removed from these Macintosh systems, because it no longer exists. This had happened before as well, certain systems like the MacPro1,1 were capable of running Windows 7 or newer (even though Apple didn't list support for those)- you just had to go out and find the drivers yourself, which was fairly easy since nothing in that machine was really proprietary. That is because Windows 8 (or newer) is capable of booting directly from EFI without the compatibility layer in-between (and therefore an MBR partition).Īs far as I know, Apple isn't really even providing driver packages anymore since these operating systems generally support the Macintosh hardware OOTB. The CSM (compatibility module) was recently depreciated and removed from the 2013 Mac Pro, and now several of their laptops as well. ![]() Will update.Traditionally, "Bootcamp" has been a conglomeration of two separate things:ġ) A compatibility module residing in the system firmware (an EFI module) that provided the ability to boot legacy MBR-based operating systemsĢ) A set of drivers packaged by Apple that was more or less guaranteed to install all required drivers for your system I ordered a 20$ battery and expect better performance and thermals. The terribly engineered nVidia 8600M GT may be a bit knackered as well so won't run at 40*C. This vintage of GPUs naturally struggles with modern video encoding. So everything lags a bit including youtube videos. The CPU only runs at 50% unless both battery and mains power available. My battery just died and inflated this week. UNDERVOLT - When using Windows 10 in BootCamp, I use ThrottleStop to undervolt CPU to 1v. But they do allow excellent airflow and some protection. ![]() Also, the screen does not provide great protection for the fans. I tested the screen extensively to ensure it does not conduct electricity, even when damaged. I will need to monitor as the screen could make contact with the fan and deterioate over time. The screen is taped with 3M electrical tape but really held in by pressure from tightening the fan screws. In the end I just put some fibreglass screen door material between the case bottom and the fans (no grommets used). I purchased a bunch of plastic and rubber grommets. BUILD INTAKE COVERS - Wasn't quite sure how to make plastic rims and mesh grilles. Pro tip: completely disassemble ALU case bottom and remove screen will save time. Despite a good masking job with polyethylene sheets and blue tape, Keeping ALU flakes out of the remaining components was nearly impossible. ![]() Finished with Swiss micro files and some sandpaper. Used Milwaukee Hole Dozer for large diameter holes cut the ALU in 10 seconds. Drilled increasingly large pilot holes in case bottom at fan blade center. CUT VENT HOLES IN CASE BOTTOM- Rush job so did not want to entirely disassemble the laptop before drilling. The Apple factory & refurb paste jobs were atrocious BTW fitment with only 5 screws for 3 dies is weak. I used Gelid GC-Extreme which I find superb for the low pressure, sloppy heatsinks of laptops. But the MBP has some ALU at the edges of the GPU & CPU heatsinks so that would be impossible to isolate relaibly. I wanted to use Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut for max thermal performance. THERMAL PASTE - Cleaned with 99.99% iso alcohol then ArtiClean and lens tissue. But that site is focused on Windows and really helped me get Windows 10 running on the old BootCamp.ģ- Improve seal between fans and radiators with 3M 105*C electrical tapeĤ- Drill 35mm vent holes in case bottom under fans & add covers Running El Capitan & Windows 10 via BootCamp (Windows 10 was a root canal to install as Apple dropped support but I got it to work perfectly). Similar mods can be made to newer MacBook Pros.
